Early in the Mars Exploration Rover Mission, the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL) and NASA made the decision to create relationships
with venues, such as museums, science centers, and planetariums, where
the public can feel a part of the Mars exploration. Education and
visualization experts at JPL/NASA have worked with an alliance of
science centers, museums, and other informal education partners to
disseminate collections of imagery for significant exhibition displays
and large-screen viewings. Participating institutions are provided
special access to raw images and professional development from JPL
staff. This alliance has provided the backbone of image and
information dissemination from the MER mission to the informal
educational venues. The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum in
downtown Chicago is one of the first members of this visualization
alliance. Northwestern works through Adler and its membership in the
Mars Visualization Alliance to create stereocopic Mars images. This
work is enabled by a joint position between Northwestern Information
Technology and the Astronomy Department of the Adler Planetarium.
