A few years ago, advanced visualization required large, expensive facilities. Today, high-end visualization can be done at a cost marginally higher than a typical workstation. The Northwestern University Information Technology Visualization Lab (Vislab) is a versatile lab that allows individual researchers and small groups to carry out visualization completely for teaching and research. The Vislab has been used for several projects since it was created. The stereocopic images from the Mars Exploration Rover mission have provided an excellent opportunity to use the Vislab facility to create high-quality visuals for the public as well as display them for small groups. The geowall 3D projection system in the Vislab is similar to the one on public display at the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum. Moreover, coordinated work between Northwestern and Adler has resulting in compelling images, slideshows, and presentations from Mars, all in 3-D!

At Northwestern, we have used this stereocopic content in geology and astronomy undergraduate classes and for outreach to area schools (see, Outreach section for details).
